How to protect yourself this school year from seasonal influenza and H1N1 (Swine) Flu
- Get the Seasonal Influenza Vaccine before school starts. If you are able to get the seasonal influenza vaccine which is currently available, do so before the start of school, especially if you are in one of the high risk groups (including both persons at high risk for complications from influenza as well as persons at risk for influenza disease and subsequent transmission of disease). If you are unable to do this prior to school onset, you can get this at The Ashe Center Immunization Clinic.
- Prepare a general self treatment kit prior to arrival on campus for you to keep where you live. See below for the Ashe Center “What to Pack” checklist.
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and water OR hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. See below for more information on respiratory hygiene
- Get the H1N1 Influenza Vaccine when it becomes available. When the H1N1 vaccine is available (currently forecast for mid-October to early November) get the vaccine especially if you fall into one of the high risk groups. More info from the CDC...
How to protect others from influenza
- If you are coughing, cough into a tissue or your sleeve if a tissue is not available. Avoid coughing directly into your hand as everything you touch after this will have influenza virus on it.
- If you sick with a high fever and cough or sore throat, stay at home or in your room. Contact your instructor or professor to determine how you can make up missed work. You may return to classes when you have not had a fever for 24 hours.
