Travel Clinic

Planning a trip to a developing country?  Need information, medications or vaccinations for an upcoming trip? The Ashe Center provides the Travel Clinic as a service to all registered students. The consultation is free if you purchased the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). If you waived SHIP, there is a $40 fee for this visit.

A Travel Clinic visit will provide you with:

  • Detailed travel health information including risk for infection based on your itinerary and planned activities while abroad.
  • Brief review of medical history and recommended precautions and preventative measures based on your health.
  • Review of your vaccination history. Required and recommended vaccines will be discussed.
  • Prescriptions for recommended travel medications such as for malaria prevention, traveler’s diarrhea, altitude illness.

Once you have decided on your destination(s) you should:

  • Research online at www.cdc.gov/travel/ or at www.mdtravelhealth.com for more information about your trip.
  • Retrieve your vaccination records from your old medical providers, parents and/or old medical records. Please bring your vaccine record to your Travel Clinic appointment.
  • Review “What shots do I need?” in our Immunization web site as well as the price list section for information on vaccine costs.
  • Schedule a Travel Clinic appointment at the Ashe Center. It is recommended that you schedule your appointment at least 4 weeks in advance of your departure.

You can schedule a Travel Clinic appointment online, via phone or in person.

  • To schedule on line go to our Online services and select a “PC Travel Visit” appointment. If you are departing in less than 2 weeks it is recommended that you call for an appointment.
  • You can schedule an appointment via phone by calling (310) 825-4073.

Once the appointment is scheduled please complete the online Clinical Travel History Questionnaire. This should be done prior to your arrival to your appointment to avoid delays during the visit.

Note: Travel immunizations administered at the Ashe Center are a covered service with SHIP if you have met your annual deductible.
If you do not have SHIP, you may also receive travel vaccinations for a fee. The price list gives you information on cost.

Note: If you previously received a full travel consultation and are aware of what prescription medication(s) you may need, please schedule a Prescription Only Travel Clinic visit. This visit is free for SHIP students; otherwise there is a $30 fee. Or, if you have researched the web and your personal vaccination records and you know what vaccines you need, and you do not need prescriptions for malaria or traveler’s diarrhea medications, simply schedule an appointment directly with our Immunization Clinic instead.

Note to EAP Students:

  • If your travel visit is due to an EAP requirement, please be advised that you must attend a Travel Clinic visit and have your EAP Travel Medicine (Clinic) Certificate signed by an Ashe Travel Clinician at that visit. You are not however, required to have the recommended or required vaccines at Ashe if you do not have SHIP. You may choose to receive these shots elsewhere. If you choose to get them here, the cost of the shots can be found by clicking on this price list.

Comments:

  • If you are traveling to Western Europe or Canada, a Travel Clinic visit is not needed. Instead, a Wellness Exam visit may meet your needs, including routine vaccinations.
  • If you require a physical examination, laboratory tests, x-rays or forms to be completed for your trip, discuss this with an Ashe scheduler so that s/he may direct you appropriately. It may be that you need a Health Clearance Assessment visit rather than a Travel Clinic appointment or both.
  • If you have any questions regarding SHIP, coverage of vaccinations or medications, please contact our Insurance Office at (310) 825-4073, option 4.
