How to Use Your SHIP Medical Benefit
SHIP is designed to COMPLEMENT the Ashe Center services. USHIP Basic has 3 separate benefits: Medical, Behavioral Health, and Vision. GSHIP and USHIP Plus have 4 separate benefits. Those from USHIP Basic, plus dental. The following is general information about using the medical benefit.
For medical care, it is most important that you use the Ashe Center when we are open if:
- It is NOT an emergency
- You are within 50 miles of the campus
Carry your SHIP ID cards with you. ID cards are issued by SHIP medical, vision care, and dental care providers. The current SHIP insurance carriers, and their plan descriptions, are provided on the Ashe Center web site. For a quick overview of all plans click onto the current year SHIP Brochure.
Important general information to know about your SHIP medical plan benefits:
- Your SHIP medical plan contains a Plan Year Deductible, Coinsurance obligations that you must pay out of pocket, as well as patient Copayments for some services.
- Out of area SHIP medical plan benefits are greatly reduced when you receive non-emergency medical care more than 50 miles from the UCLA campus.
- It is important to initiate all non-emergency care at the Ashe Center when you are within 50 miles of the UCLA campus.
- If the Ashe Center cannot provide the care you need, you will be referred to a medical plan Network Provider.
Using your SHIP Medical Plan in an Emergency
- Call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Room.
- If you use an ambulance, there is no need to pay them then, though they may request it.
- Show your SHIP Medical Plan ID card at the Emergency Room when asked.
- Get the care you need.
- You will probably have received services from several providers (doctors, hospital facility, ambulance, consultants). Each of these will bill the SHIP Medical Plan and you.
- The Emergency Room will submit bills to the SHIP Medical Plan automatically. Most likely they will send you statements as well. Do NOT pay these until you receive one that includes the SHIP reimbursement.
- The SHIP Medical Plan will send you an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) with information on what and how much they paid, and why. If you have questions about this, contact them at the phone number provided on the EOB.
Using SHIP Medical Plan When You Are Referred from the Ashe Center
- Your SHIP referral is your “authorization” to get care outside of the Ashe Center, from the provider designated on the referral form. It is NOT a promise of coverage or payment. The SHIP insurance company makes this determination.
- Once you have received service from a non-Ashe provider, this provider will bill the SHIP Medical Plan directly, and most likely send you a statement as well. Do NOT pay these until you receive one that includes the SHIP reimbursement.
- The SHIP insurance company will send you an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) with information on what and how much they paid, and why. If you have questions about this, contact them at the phone number provided on the EOB.
Using the SHIP Medical Insurance Plan When More Than 50 Miles from Campus in Non-Emergencies
- The SHIP Medical Plan has an out of area benefit for when you are more than 50 miles from campus. It does not require a referral.
- The reimbursement for out of area care is not at the same level as emergency or referred care. See the SHIP Medical Plan information on the Ashe Center web page at www.studenthealth.ucla.edu for detailed benefit information.
- Once you have received service from an out-of-area provider, this provider will bill the SHIP Medical Plan directly, and most likely send you a statement as well. Do NOT pay these until you receive one that includes the SHIP reimbursement. Out-of-Network providers may require full payment at the time of service, in which case you will need to submit a claim to the SHIP insurance company for reimbursement.
- The SHIP insurance company will send you an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) with information on what and how much they paid, and why. If you have questions about this, contact them at the phone number provided on the EOB.
