The Ashe Center offers testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as part of a primary care visit, or ordered individually through MyStudentChart for self-testing.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
According to Stanford University’s Sexual Health Peer Resource Center, 1 in 4 college students have a sexually transmitted infection (STI). And, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that although people ages 15-24 represent only 25% of the sexually active population, they account for more than half of the new STI diagnoses each year.
When asked, most students say they would know if they had an STI, but unfortunately, they’d be wrong. The truth is many of STIs have no signs or symptoms in the majority of people infected, or they have mild symptoms that can be easily overlooked, but may progress over time to cause serious health problems.
If you’ve had unprotected sex, have a new partner (or more than one partner), or for any reason are worried you have been exposed to an STI, talk to your healthcare provider at The Ashe Center about these leading common STIs: chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, herpes, HPV, syphilis and trichomoniasis.
Don’t have time for a primary care visit? Log on to MyStudentChart and follow the prompts to order self-testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

FAQs & Testing Recommendations
STI Testing Recommendations
Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend yearly chlamydia testing of all sexually active young people.
At The Ashe Center, Chlamydia and Gonorrhea are done together in one test.
- If asymptomatic (no symptoms), this test may be requested online via MyStudentChart.
- If symptomatic or exposed, make an appointment to be evaluated by a clinician at Student Health. This can be done through MyStudentChart or by calling the appointment desk 310-825-4073.
It can take 2 weeks after exposure to show accurate results. Results come back within a week.
Herpes
Routine herpes testing is not recommended for those without symptoms. Blood tests are done only in rare circumstances.
If you are having symptoms of herpes, your provider can swab the lesions (sores) to look for the virus. Results come back within a week.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
The CDC does not recommend routine screening for HPV in young people.
For people with a cervix, a Pap test may be used to check for changes related to HPV. In some cases, if the pap smear shows these changes, the pap test may also include an HPV test.
Please discuss HPV testing and HPV vaccine with your provider.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
The CDC recommends HIV testing for everyone ages 13-64 at least once in their lifetime.
It can take 3-12 weeks for results to be accurate - this is called the "window period".
Check out the CDC's HIV Testing page for more information on how often you should get yourself tested.
This test is a blood test.
If asymptomatic (no symptoms), this test may be requested online via MyStudentChart.
If symptomatic and/or exposed you will need to make an appointment to be evaluated by a clinician at The Ashe Center. This can be done through MyStudentChart or by calling our main line to speak to a scheduler.
It can take between 6 weeks to 6 months after exposure to show accurate results. Results generally come back within one week.
Syphilis
The CDC states all sexually active people can get syphilis through vaginal, anal, or oral sex without a condom with a partner who has syphilis. If you are sexually active, have an honest and open talk with your healthcare provider.
Ask them if you should get tested for syphilis or other STIs. Everyone who has sex should get tested for syphilis.
Having multiple sexual partners or engaging in high-risk sexual activities increases your risk, but if you’re having sex with one person, you should still get tested.
If asymptomatic (no symptoms), this test may be requested online via MyStudentChart.
If symptomatic and/or exposed you will need to make an appointment to be evaluated by a clinician at The Ashe Center.
This can be done through MyStudentChart or by calling the appointment desk at 310-825-4073.
