Bruins' Primary Care Medical Home

All students are assigned a Primary Care Provider (PCP) at The Ashe Center who is a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant with training in family practice, pediatrics, or internal medicine. Primary care includes health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, patient education, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses.

The Ashe Center is a Primary Care Medical Home. This means that all students are assigned to a Primary Care Provider (PCP) who leads the health care team that coordinates all aspects of your preventive, acute and chronic needs using the best available evidence and appropriate technology. These relationships offer comfort, convenience, and optimal health throughout your students' time at UCLA. Our PCPs are physicians, nurse practitioners, or physicians assistants with training in family practice, pediatrics, or internal medicine. The health care team consists of the PCP, medical assistants, license vocational nurses, clinical coordinators, and registered nurses. All non-emergency care is coordinated through the Ashe PCP, including referrals to specialists.

Costs and Student Health Fees

Fees for utilizing The Ashe Center for student health services are determined by eligibility type (UCSHIP, non SHIP, BruinCare, or fee for service). UCSHIP Premium Fees

For information on UCSHIP premium fees for the current plan year, visit the Insurance section of our website.

UCSHIP (UC Student Health Insurance Plan)

The University of California Student Health Insurance Plan (UCSHIP) provides high-quality, affordable and convenient coverage that protects students from unexpected health care costs. The plan is built especially for students, and students are actively involved in its design. Because all UC students are required to have medical insurance, registered students are automatically enrolled in UCSHIP.

  • UCSHIP covers medical, pharmacy, dental, vision, and mental health and substance use disorder services for UC undergraduate and graduate students and their eligible dependents.

Under the UCSHIP plan guidelines, the first place your student should seek care is The Ashe Center. Many services, including preventive care, are offered at no cost or for a low copay. If your student needs care The Ashe Center can’t provide, they'll receive a referral for care outside of The Ashe Center.

Annual UCSHIP Waiver Process

To waive UCSHIP coverage, your student must have other health insurance coverage that meets the university’s health insurance requirements. Your student must submit a waiver application prior to the start of each new academic year to waive coverage that year.

Here are seven things to know when applying for a UCSHIP waiver:

  • Your student must submit the waiver application and supporting documents during the waiver period.
  • Your student must submit the waiver application for each academic year they want to waive UCSHIP coverage.
  • Your student can complete the application online during the fall, winter or spring waiver periods. The waiver will be applied to the full academic year — or to the remainder of the academic year if you apply during the winter or spring terms.
  • When your student submits a waiver application, we contact the health insurance company to verify that they are actively enrolled. They will receive a quick response to their application.
  • If the waiver is approved, your student must maintain active enrollment in your health insurance plan for the entire academic year. Before the start of every term, we reverify that they are enrolled in your health insurance plan.
  • If we cannot verify that your student is actively enrolled in a health insurance plan, they will be notified by email and/or text message that their waiver was denied. The student will then be enrolled in UCSHIP and charged the cost of coverage for that term.
  • If your student's waiver is denied, you can appeal the decision by submitting proof of current insurance coverage from your health insurance plan.

BruinCare at The Ashe Center

The Ashe Center wants all UCLA students to feel comfortable accessing all of their medical needs through our facility, which is why we developed BruinCare. While many students waive UCSHIP, these students are likely to still utilize Ashe Center services because of our center's convenience and central location. All registered students can utilize The Ashe Center.

  • BruinCare is a program that gives students who have waived UCSHIP prepaid access to certain services at The Ashe Center. By purchasing BruinCare during the waiver process, you eliminate the $25 visit fee, and more.

COVID-19 Services & Updates

If your student is experiencing symptoms consistent with COVID-19 or has had close contact with someone who was diagnosed with the virus, direct your student to contact the UCLA Exposure Management Team (EMT). If your student tested positive for COVID-19, do not wait for a response to your message, your student should start isolation immediately and a member of our team will follow up within a few business days. The EMT member will help you determine the need for testing, treatment, quarantine, and/or isolation.

Confidentiality and Third Party Access

According to the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), students in higher education institutions are considered to be adults with exclusive rights over their student records. Students are the only ones who can authorize the release of information from their student records, including their financial and medical records. Granted by the student, to enable a third party access to the student's financial records, academic records and billing reminders.

Third parties are often family members of the students. Please note that without third party access to a student's account, no information can be disclosed to anyone but the student. This includes parents calling regarding the student's billing account. The student at any time can modify access privileges.

No health information will appear on a student’s academic records, including any reference to whether or not student health services were ever used, unless the student specifically requests the disclosure of this information, and to minimize disclosure, charges to your Bruin Bill will appear as 'Student Services Fee' and do not reference Ashe Center.

We take protecting your students' privacy very seriously. Our staff of licensed independent practitioners operate under the professional conduct standard of the UC Faculty Code of Conduct and the California Department of Consumer Affairs. Our services are confidential, meaning that we will not disclose information about students' treatment to anyone who is not directly involved in their care without their written permission, or as required by law.

Note: If your student is age 18 or older, confidentiality includes not disclosing information about treatment to parents or guardians.

UCLA Immunization Requirements

The UC Immunization Policy requires all newly-admitted incoming students to provide proof of vaccination or immunity to measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), pertussis (whooping cough), varicella (chickenpox), and screening for tuberculosis, prior to entering and enrolling at the University of California. The meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) is required for students age 21 and younger.

In addition, newly admitted incoming students must be screened for tuberculosis risk by completing the TB risk questionnaire form on the Ashe Center Patient Portal. Students who have any “yes” answers on the questionnaire are at higher risk for TB infection and are required to submit documentation of either skin or blood testing for TB, done within the 6-month period preceding entry to UCLA. Those with a previous positive TB test are required to submit documentation of a chest x-ray done within the 6-month period preceding entry to UCLA.

All students must submit their information electronically through the Ashe Center Patient Portal only. Students with a specific program exception should follow the instructions given to them by their program/department.

When The Ashe Center is Unavailable

If The Ashe Center is closed or there is not an appointment available as soon as your student needs it, they still have access to care -- both online, and in the local community using their UCSHIP benefits.

All students can access our 24/7 Nurseline by phone, LiveHealth Online via telehealth, or visit a local urgent care center, or emergency department nearby (if necessary). Costs will vary based on eligibility type. See the Fees section of our website and the UCSHIP benefits guide for more details.

Telehealth & Online Services

Online video appointments (telemedicine) with an Anthem network provider when The Ashe Center is closed or unavailable. Your UCSHIP plan makes seeing a doctor easy when The Ashe Center is not available (building closures, away from campus, or if your student just has a very busy schedule that prevents them from scheduling an in-person appointment).

LiveHealth Online telehealth appointments are $0 for UCSHIP students.

LiveHealth Online provides access to U.S. board-certified doctors 24/7/365 via phone or online video consults for urgent, non-emergency medical assistance, including the ability to write prescriptions. LiveHealth Online provides behavioral health services as well. If follow up care is required after a consult, the student must obtain a referral from The Ashe Center prior to seeking care outside of The Ashe Center.

In Case of Emergency

The Ashe Center is not an emergency facility and is NOT open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, UCLA students have convenient, on-campus access to Ronald Reagan Medical Center's Emergency Department in case of emergency.

Emergency room visits at participating Anthem in-network facilities have a co-payment of $125. If your student is admitted, this co-payment will be waived and you will be charged the hospitalization co-insurance rate.

Additionally, the UCLA Emergency Room can be reached directly at (310) 825-2111. Remember that it is important for students to follow up with their Ashe Center Primary Care Provider (PCP) at least 24-48 hours after being seen in an urgent care facility to ensure continuity of care.
